- Over 30000 lives saved
- Over 9000 successful search missions
- Over a million state and private users of radio beacons over the world
- International network of over 30 national coordination centers
COSPAS-SARSAT international satellite search and rescue operations support system allows real-time tracking of distress signals from shipborne, aviation and personal radio beacons, determination of their geographic coordinates and instant notification of search and rescue services and coordination centers responsible of emergencies.
System is openly accessible and free of charge for those in distress.
Project's main purpose is to provide maximal survivability in open seas and remote terrain emergencies where any communication is often absent and timely notification of emergencies is problematic.
For this purpose, a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEOSRS) and geostationary (GSSRS) spacecrafts equipped with 406 MHz signal processing and retranslation units is used. It is gradually expanded and its communication equipment is constantly enhanced.
Cospas-Sarsat ensures saving thousands of human lives annually, and in many countries is an integral part of national search and rescue infrastructure.
Collaboration with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and other intergovernmental institutions enables upgrading spacecraft complement and maintaining the mission capabilities in compliance with requirements, standards and proposals of users from different countries.
